According to Ford of Canada, the F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid is the best-selling hybrid truck in the country. It pairs a 3.5L V6 with an electric motor, it is rated to tow up to 11,600 lb, and it can be ordered with a built-in generator that runs tools, a campsite or, with the right equipment, essential circuits in your home. This post sets out what the F-150 PowerBoost is and what it can do, using only published figures from Ford, Natural Resources Canada, BC Hydro and Technical Safety BC, so you can check it against your own driving in Vernon and the North Okanagan.

What the F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid is

The PowerBoost is one of the engine choices for the 2026 F-150, not a separate model. Ford of Canada lists the 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 at 435 hp and 578 lb-ft of torque, with an 11,600 lb maximum available tow rating and a 1,740 lb maximum available payload rating.

The hybrid is offered across several trims. On ford.ca, it is listed as an available engine on the 2026 F-150 STX, alongside the standard 2.7L EcoBoost V6, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and the 5.0L V8 (with the Lobo package), and as an available engine on the XLT. The sales numbers: Canada’s best-selling hybrid truck

In its January 2026 article marking 60 years of F-Series sales leadership, Ford of Canada stated that “the F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid is the best-selling hybrid truck in the country.” Ford of Canada’s 2025 sales highlights add the wider picture: the F-Series was Canada’s best-selling pickup for the 60th consecutive year, and the best-selling vehicle overall for the 16th year in a row, with 138,470 sold in 2025. Ford’s hybrid sales in Canada reached a record 34,895 in the same year.

In the U.S., Ford reported that the F-150 Hybrid remains America’s best-selling full-size hybrid pickup, with 24,596 sold in the first half of 2026.

Fuel economy: how the hybrid compares

Natural Resources Canada’s 2026 Fuel Consumption Guide rates the F-150 Hybrid 4X4 at 11.3 L/100 km city, 10.0 highway and 10.7 combined. The guide also estimates a yearly fuel cost for every vehicle, based on 20,000 km a year and regular gasoline at $1.50/L. Here is how the hybrid compares with the other 2026 F-150 4X4 engines in the same guide:

2026 F-150 4X4City / HwyCombinedEst. fuel / year
3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid11.3 / 10.010.7 L/100 km$3,210
2.7L EcoBoost V613.1 / 10.211.8 L/100 km$3,540
3.5L EcoBoost V614.0 / 10.212.3 L/100 km$3,690
5.0L V814.8 / 10.412.8 L/100 km$3,840

The largest gap is in city driving: the hybrid’s city rating is 2.7 L/100 km lower than the 3.5L EcoBoost 4X4’s. On NRCan’s annual estimates, the hybrid comes in $330 a year below the 2.7L EcoBoost and $480 a year below the 3.5L EcoBoost.

Pro Power Onboard: a generator built into the truck

Pro Power Onboard is Ford’s name for the outlets that turn the truck into a power source. Ford’s support page lists 2.0 kW and 2.4 kW systems on the F-150, plus a 7.2 kW system with up to six 120 V/20 A outlets and a 240 V outlet. Ford of Canada describes “up to an available 7.2 kW of usable power,” with multiple outlets built into the truck bed.

Ford says the system works in motion, so you can plug in on the way and arrive powered up. Parked, its Utility Idle mode lets you remove the key, lock the truck, and keep Pro Power Onboard running for extended use. Ford’s own examples by output:

Powering your home during an outage

Ford states that an F-150 Hybrid PowerBoost with the available Pro Power Onboard system can provide essential home backup when paired with a transfer switch, sold separately (Ford). In B.C., the rules for that connection are specific:

  • A CSA-approved transfer switch is required. BC Hydro says it needs an electrical permit for installation, and the transfer switch and generator must be inspected and approved by the local electrical inspector.
  • Use a licensed electrical contractor. Technical Safety BC states that all electrical work must be done under a valid electrical permit by a licensed contractor, or a homeowner where the regulation allows.
  • Never plug a generator into a household outlet. BC Hydro warns this can back-feed the grid and is a serious danger to neighbours and utility workers.
  • Keep the truck outside. BC Hydro warns never to run a generator in a garage or other enclosed or partially enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.
